Amelia is the new movie directed by Indian director Mira Nair, director of critically acclaimed movies like Salaam Bombay! which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film of 1988, Mississippi Masala, starring Denzel Washington and Sarita Choudhury, The Perez Family starring Marisa Tomei and Chazz Palmenteri, and Monsoon Wedding.
Nair's short film 11.09.01, a movie that is 11 minutes, 9 seconds, and 1 frame long. She was one of 11 directors to create such a film in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Her movie was about the Hamdani family in Queens, whose son was lost after the attacks, and who was then accused of being a terrorist.
In other words, Amelia's director is top notch and you need to watch Amelia online.
The cast includes two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, and Ewan McGregor as Amelia, her husband, and her love, respectively. Christopher Eccleston plays Fred Noonan, Earhart's navigator. It is a straight out bio-pic of one of the most fascinating Americans of the 20th century.
Swank is perfect for the part, despite biting forum posts by moviegoers who like to point out that whenever Hilary Swank plays a woman that dies, she gets nominated for an Oscar. She looks just like the photos of Earhart: unadorned, naturally beautiful, strong, and most definitely her own person.
Gere is finally old enough to have grown into the type of role he plays in this movie: husband of a strong woman with whom he has a tumultuous relationship. He's rather like Alec Baldwin in having been too “pretty” as a young actor and finally aging into a handsome middle-aged leading man.
For those who keep track of such things, Putnam was 10 years older than Earhart, while Gere is 25 years older than Swank. Not to “dis” Swank at all because she's an excellent actress, but this does appear to be one more case of a much older leading man with a much younger leading woman, something that raises the hackles of female actresses (and some of their fans) everywhere.
The movie is really good. Oscar-worthy? Maybe, find out when you watch Amelia online. It will depend on what else comes out this fall. The cinematography is beautiful, and the story is very well told. It absorbs our attention even though we know (more or less) how it all ends. It's definitely worth watching.
